The Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) convened a coordination meeting to discuss enforcement considerations related to the online sale and distribution of regulated and/or controlled plants, with particular focus on the online trade of Peyote Cactus (Lophophora williamsii).
The meeting aimed to address emerging concerns surrounding the use of e-commerce platforms for the sale of regulated plant species that may pose risks to public safety, biodiversity, and regulatory compliance. Discussions highlighted the legal status of Lophophora williamsii, a controlled plant due to its psychoactive properties, and the need for heightened vigilance in preventing its illegal propagation, sale, and distribution through online channels.
A key outcome of the meeting was the agreement on the critical role of inter-agency coordination in safeguarding the integrity of e-commerce. The participants underscored that collaboration among regulatory, trade, and law enforcement agencies is essential to ensure a safe, lawful, and responsible online trading environment. Such coordination will help protect consumers, support legitimate businesses, and prevent the misuse of digital platforms for illegal activities involving regulated and controlled plants.
Through sustained partnership and coordinated action, BPI, DTI, and PDEA aim to promote a secure and compliant e-commerce ecosystem while ensuring the protection of plant resources and adherence to existing laws and regulations.
